An economics question from a stupid guy

According to the Business Cycle Dating Committee of the National Bureau of Economic Research, the recession ended in June, 2009.

Doesn't that mean that the entire stimulus bill, passed in early Spring '09 and effective no earlier than late Spring 2009 (and still not yet fully disbursed), was a complete and unnecessary waste of time, effort and money?

And, that all the claims that the stimulus bill "kept things from getting worse" are simply not true, because the recession had already ended?

I guess those stupid guys who said "focus on unemployment" weren't so stupid after all.
