Gringos and yankees

"Speaking ahead of Amazon summit, Lula calls on industrialised countries to provide financial help to halt deforestation. "Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez . . . one of the Palestinians' most vociferous defenders, denounced Israel as "a murderous arm of the Yankee empire" during a visit Wednesday by Iran's Mahmoud Ahmadinejad."

I thought it was no longer socially acceptable for political leaders to use ethnic slurs in every day speech. I guess it depends on which ethnicities are being slurred.
