The Obama plan for Afghanistan

Bring the troops out of Iraq, and transfer them to Afghanistan, because we can fix that place up real quick.

Right.

Obama really needs to take a break from the Lincoln books and read a history of British and Russian attempts to control Afghanistan.

I agree, Iraq and Afghanistan are very different. Iraqis had Saddam beat them down and there are also more educated people around… they’re more open to the idea of respecting authority (or even force) OR arguments. The Afghans just seem to rebel MORE when presented with more force… at least historically…

Also, and this is an important point, the surge was in the Bagdad area in order to help move political reconciliation forward (re: make the capital safe enough to get political business done)… The problem is not the same in Afghanistan; the capital is relatively safe now. The problems are far away and not necessarily in cities…

That's what Obama argued in the general election. Remember that dustup in the Vice-Presidential debate where Sarah Palin said that even general "McClellen" has said that a surge-like strategy would work, and Joe Biden said "no, he did not?"

Joe Biden was right. Joe Biden was also arguing against McCain's position that we should take "the surge" and apply it to Afghanistan.
