Senator Robert Byrd began his political career in the Klan.
After publicly quitting the Klan, he remained an undercover Klan mole.
As senator, Byrd opposed and/or filibustered all significant civil rights legislation of the '60's.
But, in 2008, he endorsed Obama (against the wishes of 60+% of the Democrats in his state).
Therefore, Senator Byrd is honored as a fighter for social justice worthy of a state funeral.
