More news from the Middle East . .

The father and grandfather of a 16-year-old Turkish girl stand accused of murder for burying her alive because she brought dishonor on the family by having male friends, according to news reports out of Europe. An official described the coroner's report as "blood curdling."

Medine Memi was found in a six-foot-deep hole beside the family home in Kahta, in the Kurdish region of southeastern Turkey. She was in a sitting position with her hands tied. The autopsy showed that her lungs and stomach were full of dirt and that her death was slow and agonizing, the London Times writes, citing the Turkish newspaper Hurriyet.

Why does our government think we can drag the Middle East into the 21st century, and turn their societies into modern secular democracies? We're wasting our time, our money and the lives of our children.
