Iraq: The only hope for early withdrawal?

Americans voted in 2006 and 2008 to end American involvement in Iraq.

In response, America (under the leadership of its new "anti-war" president, who decided to honor the agreement of its last "pro-war" president) is unconditionally committed to remain in Iraq until the end of 2011.

Our only hope of early withdrawal?

"Iraqi voters could get a chance in January to hasten the withdrawal of American forces from their country by as much as a year, sending all remaining U.S. soldiers home by the end of 2010 instead of 2011. Iraq's government announced Monday that it's submitting a bill to parliament to fund a national referendum Jan. 16, giving voters a say on the security agreement that defines the pace of the drawdown. That vote would take place on the same date that Iraqis choose their next parliament, their first national vote since 2005."

Get that? American elections have no impact on the conduct of the war or the pace of withdrawal by American forces. Only Iraqi elections could possibly influence America's Iraq war policy.
